What's happening: Ramsey School District is locking in foundational character standards at Smith School, centered around inclusion, empathy, and respect. This initiative is a critical, measurable step in preparing all students for successful and ethical engagement as they progress through our district.
π― No Place for Hate: The District is using the "No Place for Hate" designation goal to embed key social-emotional skills early. Staff and students are practicing two simple, non-negotiable behaviors that define the standard:
1οΈβ£. Adding to someone elseβs experience and never taking away from it.
2οΈβ£. Being inclusive, not exclusive.
The Blueprint for Success: This standard moves beyond simple politeness. It establishes the social norms necessary for a collaborative and productive learning environmentβskills that will be essential in Ramsey's high school and beyond.
My take on this work:
"This work is not a fleeting program; it is an investment in the future of every Ramsey graduate. By establishing this clear standard of respect and inclusion at Smith School, we are providing the essential social infrastructure our students need to thrive academically, navigate complex social situations successfully, and become leaders of character as they move through the middle school, high school, and into the world. This is how we ensure their success." -Dr. Matteo, Superintendent of Schools.
Whatβs Next: Smith principal Dr. Esdale has committed to hosting classes focused on empathy, healthy relationships, and being an upstander with the goal of earning the No Place for Hate designation by June 2026.
