What's happening: Ramsey School District is proud to recognize four Ramsey High School football players who exemplified our core values of compassion, service, and community responsibility when they stopped to assist at a serious motor vehicle accident on July 16.
Senior Mason Gonzalez and teammates Trevor Broking, Luke Filippone, and Liam Mueller were traveling northbound on the Garden State Parkway in Woodcliff Lake at approximately 8:50 p.m. following their team's victory at the South Bergen Shootout 7-on-7 tournament at Becton High School. When traffic began to slow due to an accident ahead, the students observed a severely damaged vehicle facing southbound with a guardrail that had penetrated the front windshield.
Go deeper: Without hesitation, our student-athletes coordinated via text message and made the collective decision to pull over and render assistance to the injured motorist. Working alongside other Good Samaritans at the scene, the students helped facilitate the safe extraction of the victim, a young woman estimated to be in her late teens or early twenties.
The bottom line: This incident reflects the character education and leadership development that are integral components of our athletic programs and educational mission. These young men demonstrated maturity, quick thinking, and selfless service when faced with an emergency situation.
Our District commends our student athletes for their heroic actions and for representing our school community with distinction. Their willingness to stop and help a stranger in need exemplifies the values we strive to instill in all our students.
