What happened:
Mrs. Kertesz and Mrs. Dumontβs preschool classes made a fresh salad with tomatoes they picked from the Hubbard Garden. Students washed, chopped, mixed, and served, practicing fine motor and language skills through a joyful hands on cooking experience. Mrs. Diaz, Hubbard Schoolβs occupational therapist, joined in on the hands on learning, while Mrs. Morrissey, the speech therapist, supported students during the activity. Together they made it a beautiful opportunity for children to grow, connect, and practice important developmental skills.
Why it matters:
This activity fostered social interaction, encouraged curiosity about new foods, and deepened each childβs connection to the natural world. Along the way, students practiced early skills like counting, noticing, and exploring with curiosity.
Character in action:
Through this experience, students showed independence as they prepared their salad from garden to table. They also practiced respect for shared tools, self control while taking turns, and empathy as they checked in with one another. These are qualities that reflect the values we strive to nurture at Hubbard.
The big picture:
The Hubbard Garden is a living classroom where wonder, community, and character grow together. With the support of teachers, specialists, and peers, experiences like this build skills that last well beyond the table!
