What started as a Profile Project in third grade has now become a life-changing contribution to a community across the globe.
Last year, students in 3Le, Shea and Brynn—now fourth graders at Dater School—embarked on a mission to fund a clean water well for a village in need. Inspired by the book Thirst by Varsha Bajaj and the third-grade Profile Project, they partnered with The Forefront Organization to bring their vision to life. Through a variety of school-wide initiatives, including bake sales and student-run stands at local sporting events, their passion sparked an outpouring of support from the entire Hubbard community.
While this project was led by Shea and Brynn, they were adamant that it be credited to Mary A. Hubbard School—because it truly took a village. Their friends and classmates across other third-grade classes stepped up to help, attend events, and spread the word. It was a collective effort rooted in kindness, empathy, and the belief that small actions can create real change.
This spring, the freshwater well was officially completed in Valabhapuram, a rural village in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. Built near a riverbank, the well includes a system that filters the water and provides clean access to several hundred residents. The site will be monitored regularly in its early stages and maintained every few months to ensure it continues to operate effectively.
A plaque at the base of the well reads:
“Donated by: Mary A. Hubbard School”—a lasting symbol of what our students can achieve when they come together for a greater purpose.
We are so proud of Shea and Brynn for modeling what it means to be global citizens—and grateful for the Hubbard and Ramsey community that helped bring this vision to life.
