Throughout the past several weeks, third graders at Hubbard School have been working hard on their Profile Project: Making a Difference Here and Near. This meaningful project challenged students to identify real world problems, think critically about possible solutions, and use their voices to create positive change within their school, community, and world.
Students began by developing inquiry questions centered around issues they noticed in their everyday lives. Through collaboration, research, surveying, mathematical thinking, discussion, and observation, students worked together to collect information, make noticings, and better understand the problems they hoped to address. From there, groups created proposals and action plans that outlined their ideas and next steps.
Throughout the project, students were pushed to think creatively, communicate effectively, collaborate with peers, and problem solve thoughtfully. These are skills that extend far beyond the four walls of the classroom and help prepare students for real life experiences and future opportunities.
Student projects varied widely and reflected the creativity and passion of each group. Some students created blueprints and designs to improve spaces within the community, while others wrote letters to the Mayor of Ramsey to advocate for change. One group interviewed the superintendent to learn more about school wide decisions, while another designed a spin wheel focused on solving social problems among peers. Additional groups created survival guides for the next grade level, developed presentations to teach younger students, and so much more.
As part of the project, two third grade classes recently traveled to Tisdale for a cross town exchange with fellow third graders. During this first round of sharing, students demonstrated collaboration, empathy, and critical thinking as they presented their ideas, listened to different perspectives, and reflected on how even small actions can create meaningful impact in the world around us.
This exchange served as a powerful reminder of what makes Ramsey so special, and we cannot wait to see the second round of presentations, conversations, and meaningful learning that will continue to grow from this experience.
