Smith

What's happening: Smith students recently participated in the 2024 Science Buddies’ Engineering Challenge: Rubber Band-Powered Car contest. 8,800 students from a whopping 32 different countries threw their hats into the ring for this contest.

  • They skillfully assembled an amazing fleet of cars.

  • Each was ingeniously powered by nothing more than a rubber band!

  • The ultimate test? To see just how far each of these extraordinary rubber-band propelled vehicles could travel.

One of the featured projects from Smith School students was the car built by 8th Graders Luke Mangano and Ryan Budway. Their car traveled just shy of 50 feet and was subsequently highlighted at the recent STEM showcase.

What they’re saying: “Ryan and Luke's partnership was perfect for this challenge.  They took on an engineering perspective with creative freedom using their choice of the materials on the approved list.  Their car just kept going further and further with each adjustment we made; so much so that we ended up going to the gym because we ran out of room in the hallway!” -Rebecca Freund, Enrichment Teacher
