Dater Dateline

What's happening: For five decades, a very special tradition has been buzzing through the halls of Dater School. We are thrilled to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Dater Dateline, our very own student-run television show! Since its debut in the 1970s, this program has evolved into a cornerstone of the Dater experience, fostering creativity, teamwork, and school spirit.

Personal Connection: I vividly remember drafting my “sportscenter-style” sports updates at my kitchen table back in 1990 before going on air a few hours later. And then my mother running home after dropping us after at Dater to catch that day’s episode showing on closed-circuit TV. Great experiences and great memories!

Behind the Scenes: The magic of Dater Dateline is a true collaborative effort.

  • Every 5th-grade homeroom takes a turn in the spotlight, stepping into the roles of creators, producers, and editors to bring an episode to life.

  • It’s more than just a show; it’s a hands-on masterclass in media production and leadership.

A Program for Every Student: While our 5th graders handle the technical production, the heart of the show belongs to the entire school. Dater Dateline is proud to include students from every grade level through three beloved recurring segments:

  • Pet Parade: Our most popular guests have four legs! Students get the chance to introduce their pets and answer questions about their furry (or scaly) friends during an after-school interview.

  • Kid Stars: Whether it’s showcasing a massive Lego collection, playing a musical instrument, or sharing a passion for a favorite sport, this segment celebrates the unique hobbies and talents that make our students shine.

  • Book Review: Perfect for our avid readers, this segment allows students to share their favorite stories with their peers, filmed right here during recess.

Why It Matters: Having a program like Dater Dateline at our school gives students a platform to share their voices, builds confidence in public speaking, and creates a shared history that connects current students to the generations of Dater alumni who came before them. Keep an eye out for updates and episode releases!
