Superintendent Matthew J. Murphy, Ed.D., was honored as a Champion of Peace by Rotary District 7490, recognizing his commitment to mental health awareness. Dr. Murphy demonstrates his support by leading and promoting annual Stigma Free activities within the Ramsey School District, the Borough, and surrounding communities. He is also president of the Board of Trustees for West Bergen, he collects donations for meals at the organization’s group homes, and he supports the cause in many other ways.
The award is named for the promotion of peace and resolution of conflict, which is one of Rotary’s seven focus areas. However, the other six areas contribute to a sense of peace. They are fighting disease, providing clean water/sanitation, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies. Champions of Peace often work toward other specific areas that support peace.
District 7490, which represents the Rotary Clubs of Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties, presented the award on May 9.
