Welcome Back

Dear Ramsey and Saddle River Communities:

We are back and had a wonderful start to the school year, with only greater things coming! The first few days have been terrific and it is a joy going around to each and every school talking to staff and students alike. The enthusiasm is real and palatable. Tonight begins the start of our Back To School Nights and I encourage you to attend. Our teachers, administrators, and custodial staff have worked tirelessly to showcase your child’s learning environment.

This year’s Ramsey Parent Academies are still being finalized, however, I am sharing the first three events (see below). New to the lineup is an emphasis on our scholar-athletes. Stay tuned for more information.

Please save the date of October 7 for a casual Open House of new facilities at Hubbard, Tisdale, and Smith Schools from 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM. Postcards were mailed to all households to alert people to that opportunity.

Revised FAQs for this school year's protocols have been posted on the website. There were just two substantial changes to the document both were spoken about at the last Board of Education meeting. They refer to quarantines for fully vaccinated individuals and an update to "close contact." Fully vaccinated staff and students will not need to quarantine if exposed to COVID-19 as long as they don't develop symptoms. In the school setting, there is an exception to the CDC definition of close contact. In the indoor classroom setting, the close contact definition now excludes students within 3 to 6 feet of an infected student (laboratory-confirmed or a clinically compatible illness) where both the infected student and the exposed student(s) correctly and consistently wore well-fitting masks the entire time. While this exception does not apply to teachers, staff, or other adults in the indoor classroom setting, the good news is that we are not expecting the need to quarantine as many students as we did last year.

I realize that with the start of school, both students and parents might be feeling a bit more anxious than usual. In fact, you and or your child might exhibit behaviors that you don’t typically do. If this is the case, we have counselors on staff who are available to you free of charge. Everything is kept confidential. There is a saying in counseling: "It is better to deal with it while it is a small issue before it comes to a larger one."

I'm really looking forward to all the traditional parts of school, and I refuse to let health protocols get in the way of that joy. Please join me in having a great year!
