CLASS PARTICPATION:

The class participation grade will be determined through an evaluation of the following criteria:

-          preparation for class

-          daily oral participation

-          effort and attitude

Students are expected to be actively involved in the class. The best way to learn a second language is to use it.

HOMEWORK:

Homework, written, listening or oral practice will be assigned on a daily basis.

Written work, other than work from the workbook, must be maintained in the folder with assignment dated and pages noted.  Written homework may consist of exercises from the textbook, from the board, from the workbook, or a worksheet.  It will be checked on the day it is due for completion and accuracy. It may also be collected for a quiz grade.  Failure to produce homework on the due date will result in a zero for the assignment.  It is the student¡¯s responsibility to complete homework on time.

Make-up work, due to absence, is the student's responsibility.  Please phone your classmates or refer to Teacher Notes on the high school website for the assignment.

Students absent from class will be given an opportunity to complete assignments they have missed.  Normally, the homework will be due the day after the student returns to school.  Absences due to field trips or in school activities are not excused for homework assignments.  In the event of extended absence, the length of time for completion of the work will be determined by the duration of the absence.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

Special projects will provide students with an opportunity to use the language in creative ways.  No more than 2 projects will be assigned per marking period.

Any special project completed for the class will be graded as a test.  Clear guidelines will be established concerning completion of each project.

QUIZZES

Weekly quizzes will be administered in both written and oral form.  The quiz grade will be determined by averaging the results of both oral and written quiz grades.

TESTS

Testing will be done at the end of each unit.  Students will be tested in both oral and written form.  All tests will reflect work which has been drilled in class and practiced in homework assignments.  The MP test grade will reflect an average of all tests and special projects for each marking period.

FINAL EXAM AND FINAL GRADE

The final examination will test both written and oral proficiency.

EXTRA HELP

Language learning requires constant practice and diligence with homework.  If you experience any problems, please see me after class.  I am usually available before school or by appointment to arrange for extra help.  You may also wish to work with a peer tutor for extra practice.

ONLINE HELP

Use of Internet sites for helping with the study of Chinese is encouraged. However, it is expected that all student work will be the individual effort of the student and will be reflective of the level of work practiced in class. Use of online translators to translate thoughts, ideas, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs is prohibited. Please consult the student handbook for further information and be aware that the Academic Integrity Policy will be enforced.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

World Language Department

Ramsey High School

Ramsey High School is committed to providing an education to all students where academic honesty is valued.  Moral development is an important aspect of the educational learning process.  School should be a place where the measure of each student's work is an accurate assessment of that student's performance.

The World Language Department would like to clarify the Academic Integrity Policy as it relates to assignments in our department.  Students will not be permitted to use online translators to translate ideas, thoughts, paragraphs, sentences or phrases in conjunction with assigned work.  The work presented by students must be indicative of the student's own individual effort and reflective of the curriculum which has been covered in class.
