Welcome to my classroom!

I am pleased to have the opportunity to teach your child. My goal is to increase your child’s confidence and skills in literacy and mathematics. Instruction incorporates immediate academic support, multi-sensory learning, compensatory learning strategies, extra time for processing learning, and positive reinforcement. The instructional environment provides an opportunity for the teacher to individualize your child’s learning needs through explicit and direct instruction. This instruction will include adaptive methods to foster the acquisition of phonological awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary and fluency. During math, I use the same text materials and manipulatives which are utilized in the mainstream classrooms. The pace and presentation of the lesson are adjusted according to the individual needs of the student.

During Small Group Instruction and Basic Skills class, I use a multi-sensory approach to teach reading. Multi-sensory teaching allows children to acquire reading skills through the simultaneous usage of visual, auditory and kinesthetic modalities. This method enhances memory and learning. Links are consistently made between the visual (what we see), auditory (what we hear) and kinesthetic (what we feel) pathways in learning to read and spell. The multi-sensory teaching approach is the direct, explicit teaching of letter-sound relationships, syllable patterns and word parts.

Daily lessons may include a review of letter sounds and symbols, and a wordlist or word blending exercise. This is followed by a reading selection, which gives the opportunity for learning reading comprehension strategies.

All leading research indicates that “reading improves reading”. The best gift we can give any child is to help them to develop an interest and love of reading. Please set aside time each day for “family reading” where you can share books with your child. I encourage you to read with your child and have your child read to you.
